Sitting The Exam

1.
(i)

The graph should be completed as shown below. In order to be exact you should have measured half way between the £6000 and £8000 lines on the axis of the graph, and then used your ruler to draw a line directly opposite this point.

(ii)

£47 000 million.

(iii)

Here you need to use your knowledge of inward investment, which does not feature on all syllabuses – so do not worry if your syllabus does not cover this topic. However, a good answer might read:

Japanese companies want to make profits by selling cars and other products in the EU. However, quotas were put on, to limit the amount of imports that could be brought into the EU. If Japanese firms make their products in an EU country they can avoid these quotas, and so increase their sales. Also, wage costs are lower in most EU countries than in Japan, so they save money.

2.
(i)

Bangladesh

If you read the question carefully, then look carefully at the correct place in the table it is a straightforward question – but you must stay calm and do things properly, or you could make a mistake. Do not rush. Do not panic.

(ii)

Canada

Again you need to think clearly. ‘Mechanised’ means a lot of tractors. A low number of people per tractor means a lot of tractors per person. If you rush in without thinking it is quite easy to get this answer the wrong way round.

(iii)

Bangladesh = Intensive subsistence

Canada = Extensive commercial

UK = Intensive commercial

(iv) There are several stages in this answer:
  1. what kind of graph to use?
  2. what scale to use?
  3. mark in the three bars.
  4. shade and label – to make sure that all the marks are gained.

Always use pencil at first, then you can rub out if you make a mistake. Then ink in later if you wish – but I would leave a neat pencil drawn graph without ink – as long as it is quite clear what you have drawn.

3.
(i)

You were given 3 lines to write, for 1 mark. The three lines suggests that more than a one word answer is needed. This means that ‘smaller’ may not be enough. A full answer would read:

The newcomers average 2.5 persons per household, which is 0.7 persons less per household than with the villagers. This is significantly smaller.

(ii)

Show your working:

2500 persons, at 2.5 per house = 2500
25000 = 1000 houses
25 = 1 house

(iii)

Use the population pyramids to answer this question.

Tick statements 1, 2 and 4

(iv)

There is only part of a line for the first part of this answer, then a line and three quarters for the second part. An answer that uses all the space might read:

The newcomers have more cars (88% compared to 73%).

More newcomers own their own houses (80% compared to 70%) and fewer rent from the council (4% compared to 12%).

(v) This describes the types of jobs that people do, which is linked to how much they earn.

(vi) More newcomers are in high income jobs, like professional and skilled, and fewer are in low income, unskilled jobs. So the newcomers can afford more cars, and to buy their own houses.
