4 Feedback

Urbanisation
| Here
is the feedback and answers to the Mapwork
Exercise in Unit 04. |
These
are my answers. They are not the only possible answers.
The main aim of this exercise was to get you to look closely at
the map and find details from which to deduce information about
the types of housing in specific areas.
If
you think that your answers are better than mine, then 'Ask
the Examiner' and tell me why!
| Client
1 would like house F (744707) because: |
it
is only about 1 km from the University, so she has easy
access to work |
there
are schools nearby for her children |
there
is open space nearby, for children to play, and this usually
indicates a 'middle class' area where there are likely to
be other professional people like her |
the
estate is carefully laid out, with no through traffic, so
is safe and quiet |
it
is not too close to the town centre or the motorway, so
is not too noisy |
| Client
2 would like house D (724707) because: |
this
is probably on a council estate - the road pattern shows
that it is mid to late 20th century, but
the housing seems more densely packed than in the nearby
estate where house F is located. It is also closer
to the industrial area 7170 and 7171, so more likely
to be council housing. (Compare this with the estate
around house F, which is built near to the University,
so was probably designed for people on better salaries.) |
there
are schools nearby for the children |
there
is space nearby for the children to play |
there
is also a leisure centre nearby - another possible indication
that this is an area of council housing, because leisure
centres are often built by the council for people who
live on council estates |
| Client
3 would like house B (662724) because: |
this
looks like expensive housing. It is on the edge of
town, obviously built in the second half of the 20th
century, with carefully planned layout and lots of
open space |
it
has easy access to the M4 interchange, for access
to the road system of southern England |
there
is plenty of open space in the estate, and it is also
near to open countryside for dog walking |
there
are two nearby golf courses, which might appeal to
a man of his age and social class, and to his wife
when she is not dog walking! |
the
land is quite hilly - not so steep as to be inaccessible,
but steep enough to give attractive views |
| Client
4 would like house E (671768) because: |
it
is out of town in a quiet little village |
there
are a variety of different types of landscape -
the river, flood plain, scarp slope, woodland and
chalk upland - all within walking distance or a
short car journey |
all
the other houses are ruled out because they are
too crowded and busy |
| Client
Group 5 would like house C (710733)
because: |
it
is close to the town centre |
it
is on the edge of an area of rectangular street
patterns, probably built in the late 19th
or early 20th century. Much housing
like this is for rent nowadays. |
it
is adjacent to the inner ring road - a possible
area of demolition and redevelopment in the late
20th century |
the
housing in this area might be fairly cheap |
the
location is not suitable for any of the other
house seekers, especially those with young children
or those seeking peace and quiet |
they
want easy access to the town and its transport
systems |
| Client
6 would choose house A (697732) because:
it
is in an area of rectangular street pattern, which
looks crowded, so houses are probably small -
probably smaller than those around house C |
it
is further from the town centre, so may be quieter |
not
too close to busy main roads |
areas
of old housing like this tend to have a lot of
older residents, or have concentrations of students,
young people and/or ethnic minorities. There is
no evidence from the map to tell us which, if
any, of these groups live in this area, but young
people are more likely to concentrate near the
town centre and/or the University. There is no
sign of mosques, temples, etc. to suggest a strong
ethnic concentration - although such buildings
are often not yet marked on OS maps |
it
is close to Prospect Park, for walks |
